What we do

The Access Project

We support students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access top universities, through a unique combination of tuition and in-school mentoring. We work with them to make good applications, get the grades and transition to university.

The Access Project

The Access Project is an innovative education charity that helps bright young people from disadvantaged backgrounds gain places at top universities. Our volunteers are trained and supported to be effective tutors who work with our students for an hour a week to raise their grades. In addition, a dedicated school-based staff member mentors the students so they have the knowledge and support to make strong university applications. Our results show this approach works.

Did you know?
  • Only 2.5 out of every 100 young people from the most disadvantaged backgrounds get a place at a top university
  • Young people from the most advantaged backgrounds were 9.8 times more likely to get a place at a top university than the least advantaged

That’s why we work with our partner schools to support their students in overcoming the main barriers to access: not getting the grades their talent warrants; not seeing university as an option for ‘people like them’; and not having the support and guidance to make a competitive application.

Our programme makes a real difference
  • Students with The Access Project are four times as likely as similarly disadvantaged student to attend top universities. 
  • The charity helps more students access top universities every year.  61% of our students placed at Top Third institutions in 2018/19, up from 57% the year before and 53% in 2016/17.​
  • GCSE students with The Access Projects make on average half a grade more progress than their peers, in their tutored subjects.
  • The Access Project is committed to working with the teenagers who need us most. This year we ensured that 94% of our students came from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
