I found out about The Access Project almost by accident, bumping into one of my colleagues tutoring GCSE Maths in the corridor. From this chance encounter, I have now tutored for 4 years myself and over 30 of my colleagues have started to tutor too. Many tutors often remark that the hour spent tutoring is one of the most enjoyable parts of the week and this is certainly true for the dedicated tutors here in the Treasury who have now volunteered almost 700 tutorials to students in London and across the UK.

Following the kind of rigorous appraisal you’d expect from the government’s finance department, we reckon there are three main benefits to our staff tutoring with The Access Project:

  1. Coaching skills – The Access Project gives all of our staff the opportunity to develop their coaching and management skills whatever their level
  2. Future recruitment – students are tutored in the Treasury each week. Hopefully they will apply to work here when they’ve finished their studies
  3. Staff enjoyment and job satisfaction!

But most importantly, The Access Project is great because it creates an environment in which the small amount of time you give each week can make a big difference to the educational attainment and lives of young people. I would really encourage anyone interested in expanding this to their organisation to get in touch!
