What do students say about The Access Project? Today, we’re sharing the story of Patrice, a talented and determined Year 13 student from London, who has ambitions of going to university to become an accountant.
Patrice joined The Access Project when he was in Year 10. Back then, 14-year-old Patrice had no idea what the future held for him. But he knew one thing – he wanted to go to university, and he was determined to make it happen. He enrolled in English tuition with The Access Project for support with his GCSE exams.
Patrice said: “I knew that preparing for university should start early, so I wanted to get the best GCSE grades possible. I found English particularly difficult, so I opted for English tuition with The Access Project”.
And his hard work paid off. With the help of his tutor, Patrice achieved a grade 8 in English Literature. “I never thought it was possible when I started GCSEs in Year 10”, he told us. Patrice carried his newfound love of English Literature forward to sixth form, where he now studies English Literature at A level.
Now, Patrice has dreams of going to university to become an accountant. He engages in weekly mentoring sessions with his University Access Officer, who has helped Patrice consider his higher education options, develop his university application, and prepare for student life. Patrice said: “Most of my University choices were highly selective and their entry requirements were too aspirational for my predicted grades. With my University Access Officer’s support, I was able to adjust my expectations to make sure I had options”.
Patrice is on track to study his dream course at a top university. He’s received offers from the University of Leicester, Nottingham Trent University, City University of London, the University of Kent, and has just completed an interview with the University of Warwick – one of the best business schools in the country.
Patrice said: “My University Access Officer and I sat together and did a mock interview the week before, and she gave me feedback to help me prepare. I felt confident and well prepared in the interview, despite being very nervous. I would be happy attending any of the Universities I have offers from, so have lots of options”.
Patrice’s story illustrates the power of The Access Project to help widen university access and drive upwards social mobility. Through mentorship, guidance, and tailored support, The Access Project continues to deliver educational change, raising ambitions and unlocking potential in students like Patrice.
